Analog Tagging

In my first day of class with MSU’s MAET program, we did an icebreaker activity to get to know each other. I loved the metaphor of the activity. We tagged ourselves with what we teach, where we are from, and what we are interested in. By labeling ourselves with these tags, people were able to find something in common with you. Upon conversing with colleagues, we learned more about each other than just the surface level labels we gave ourselves. People would begin adding tags to each other and began to cluster/group according to alike tags.

I enjoyed this activity because I like to use analog learning in my classroom to scaffold technology teaching. I had an analog “facespace” page outside my classroom to promote digital citizenship and internet safety. Every kid in my class was a “friend” We would update our status and wall with the current things we were learning in the classroom. People around the school would write on our wall using sticky notes. Inside the classroom, each student had their own analog status update where they were writing things they were passionate about and reading each others updates. This was a very authentic reading and writing experience for my students. In kindergarten, I had paper qwerty board worksheets. First, my kids would practice writing their names or passwords or wall words. Then, they would play I Spy and color in the letters as they practiced typing on the paper keyboard. I am a big fan of analog technology learning!
